Mutual Exchange

House in Halstead

Would you like to move?  Consider a Mutual Exchange.

If you are thinking of moving to another area, or want a larger/smaller property, a mutual exchange could be for you.

A mutual exchange enables you to move, by swapping your property with another social housing tenant through an "assignment of tenancy". This enables you to swap properties without the need to go through the usual housing waiting list / lettings systems.  You can move within the district or elsewhere in the country and it may be possible to arrange a multiple swap with up to four other tenants.

An exchange will be considered subject to all tenants involved in the exchange holding a secure/assured tenancy.  Please note if you hold a 'Starter' tenancy, you are unable to exchange until you have completed your probationary period of one year.

What do I do next ?

  • Step one - Find a swap by either registering online* to HomeSwapper or HouseExchange  or you could also place your own advert e.g. in local newsagents.
  • Step two - You have found a swap - complete and return the Greenfields mutual exchange form available from our area offices or download a copy . (including non Greenfields tenants).
  • Step three - We contact you to start the process or give you grounds for refusing your application.
  • Step four - Three visits to your home are arranged by appointment:

     1. Property Inspection
                   2. Electric/Gas/Oil test & Check (allow a minimum of four hours for Electric test)
                   3. Energy Performance Certificate
  • Step five - We contact other landlords (if applicable) supply a reference and send a written property report to your exchange partner/s.
  • Step six - We review all information and with all landlords permission grant consent for you and your exchange to arrange a date to move.
  • Step seven - Arrange a date for all tenants to attend our offices to sign the deed of assignment and complete the sign up to your new home.

*We have computers in our Witham and Braintree offices for your use, please ask our customer advisors if you require help. Books are also available to view at our area offices with full details of exchanges available.
