Our fab 44 apprentices reveal why it works for them

We’re proud to have helped 44 bright young things kick-start their careers in everything from Plumbing to Business Administration over the last decade. And we’re committed to hiring up to 50 new apprentices and interns across the business between 2015 and 2020.

Harry Adams, 17, and Corey Gill, 19, began their Accountancy Apprenticeships at Greenfields last summer. To mark National Apprenticeship Week, both explained why that decision is one they are not regretting.

Harry says of the role: “I’m learning how to prioritise and am trusted with responsibilities which relate well to my apprenticeship, such as reconciling accounts and monitoring cashflow. As well as learning these skills, I love the open floor design and how sociable my team is. I chose to do an apprenticeship as opposed to a degree in order to get two-years’ work experience alongside studying.  I am definitely set on accountancy as a career.”

Corey feels the skills he’s learning from his role are having a big influence on his college course: “What we do in the office is relatable to what we’re studying. As well as accountancy skills, I’m learning how to work well in a team, to have conversations with residents, and to be professional in the workplace. This experience is having a big impact on what I want do to in the future, which is to become a fully chartered accountant.”

Half of our former apprentices have chosen to apply for roles at Greenfields once their qualifications are gained. Former Carpentry and Joinery Apprentice, Sam Medhurst, is now our Service Delivery Manager:

He said: “I started with Greenfields in 2008. As I know many other have, I found the apprenticeship experience enjoyable, especially because of the encouragement and support that Greenfields and my mentors gave me. I have developed my skills over the last decade through many different roles, leading to my current position as Service Delivery Manager. Among other things, these have included managing trades, projects, contracts, supply chain, logistics, administration/performance and scheduling.

I would always recommend starting out working life through an apprenticeship route. Gaining that practical knowledge and experience at the outset is invaluable for any career.”
