“Volunteering has really helped me to come out of my shell”

Rebecca Clark, a resident from Braintree, is celebrating her one-year-anniversary of volunteering for Greenfields as a Digi-Pal; helping other residents to get online and open up their worlds. The confidence it has given her has led her to join Greenfields Residents Group (Mid), working with other resident representatives to improve our communities and even to interview our new Chief Executive! Here, she explains how volunteering has enhanced her life:

“It all started a year ago when I joined a computer course run by Val Thompstone, Greenfields’ Digital Inclusion Co-ordinator. I really enjoyed going along and feeling part of something, particular as I suffer with anxiety and depression.

I then became a Digi Pal in January, helping other residents to get online. This has really helped me to come out of my shell. I enjoy being a Digi pal and helping people get connected; it’s enjoyable and very rewarding when people thank you and they’re happy when they leave the room. I also have a City and Guilds certificate in Basic Online Skills, which I’m so proud of.

In addition to being a Digi-Pal, I’ve become part of the Greenfields Residents Group (Mid), which I really enjoy. I have met some lovely people and have been to meetings with other members; including one recently to help decide what Greenfields could do better, and to discuss how Greenfields has already helped to improve communities the help of its residents. We had the opportunity to discuss and write down our opinions and it was nice to work as a team with so many nice people.

I’ve even had the honour of taking part in the interview process for finding Greenfields’ new Chief Executive, and Emma Palmer was selected. That was a wonderful experience.

I hope to carry on with my volunteering for as long as I can.”
